IoT Security: How secure are we? What are the security risks for 2018 and beyond?
So what does IoT Security mean in a rapidly growing device ecosystem? On Tuesday, Chuck Martin, host of The Voices of the Internet of Things podcast, and zvelo CEO, Jeff Finn, sat down to discuss the state of security—and security gap—in the exploding IoT market.
By now it’s clear the rapid invasion of web-connected “smart” devices isn’t slowing down. In 2017, an estimated 25 million “smart speakers” shipped globally (Billboard), up 300% from 2016 (Voicebot.ai). Smart speakers are just one product segment among the smart locks, thermostats, laundry machines, security cameras, and more that make up the IoT “Smart Home” sector—which in itself accounts for only ~%14 of the total IoT Market (Forbes).
The IoT revolution in other sectors (i.e. smart cities, automotive, industrial, medical, etc.) potentially pose even greater public safety and financial risks—if not managed properly. It is estimated that the number of IoT devices will reach 125 Billion by 2030 (IHS). As we move forward, collaboration and standardization will play an increasingly important role in our ability to secure and maintain the IoT of the future.
