An Experiment in Buying Internet Traffic
zvelo Chief Security Scientist, Mark Ryan Talabis, wanted to see if he could buy Internet traffic and if so, would the traffic actually be human generated or would it be driven by bots or of low quality. He performed an experiment by setting up a honeypot site (essentially a traffic trap), buying inbound traffic from 10 different providers and examining the inbound traffic. What he learned may or may not be surprising – the old adage “you get what you pay for” is true. Nevertheless this could be depressing if you are a publisher buying traffic to supplement inventory, or if you are the advertiser paying for the traffic on a CPM basis.
